Saraswathy worked on her husband's farm after they were married. She had two daughters who in turn were married, and moved away. Saraswathy's husband died many years ago and she ran the farm on her own until she was too frail to work. She sold the land and gave half each to her daughters on the understanding they would look after her.

One day she visited the city with her friend, and was involved in an accident where she broke her leg. She was taken to Government Hospital, and her daughters were asked to go and care for her there. However they never visited or enquired about her, and when her leg was healing she was discharged on to the street. Jacob's found her and admitted her to the Care Home to convalesce. In spite of requests from us she has never heard from her daughters since, and so has made Jacob's her home.

Residents

Rangamal was widowed many years ago and had no children. She was working as a live-in cleaner and cook for a family in Coimbatore. When she became too weak and frail to work the family ‘let her go’. Unfortunately she had nowhere to go except the street, where Jacob’s found her.

Govindan was found at the side of the road by the Outreach staff, unconscious and covered in sores. He was taken to Government Hospital where he recovered, and from there was taken to Jacob’s to convalesce. He has had cataract operations, is now healed and has joined the Jacob’s family.

He doesn’t say much so we know little about his past, but he makes his likes and dislikes known in no uncertain terms! He wears a towel turban as many village men do, and he has claimed his own space in the TV room.
